What is Search Engine Optimization?

Creating a Site Optimization Infrastructure

Search Engine Optimization, which means search engine optimization in Turkish, is a series of studies on listing or ranking websites in search engines. Search engines rank sites and site content according to specific criteria. Websites that are optimized according to these criteria are expected to rank higher in search engines. There are multiple ranking criteria in the underlying algorithms of search engines. The most important of these are keywords, obtaining backlinks (links, promotional articles) through these keywords, site design, implementation of meta tags, hierarchical and appropriate use of heading (h1, h2, h3, h4, h5, h6) tags on the site, domain name and age, original quality and long content, and many other factors. SEO means building a site in accordance with the requirements of search engines.

Rules Site Owners Must Follow

In other words, all the criteria mentioned above are the conditions set by search engines for sites to be listed or to rank higher. For this reason, site owners must fulfill these conditions to ensure their sites rank higher in search engines, meaning they must fully meet or comply with these criteria. SEO studies are divided into two types: on-page SEO and off-page SEO.

On-Page SEO

These are SEO studies performed in site design, programming, and content areas (infrastructure). Examples of on-page SEO include designing and programming the site to be fast according to search engines, having meta tags such as title, description, keywords, appropriate and hierarchical use of tags like heading (h1, h2, h3, h4, h5, h6) in the site structure, having a low code-to-content ratio, and having a sitemap page on the site. A sitemap is a page that lists all sub-pages or content on the site and should be registered with search engines. Search engines visit this page to ensure all content is listed in the search engine. Additionally, the originality of the content on the site, meaning it is not quoted or copied from other sites, also falls under on-page SEO. When preparing content, keywords determined in relation to the site's topic should be used clearly.

Off-Page SEO

Off-page SEO, unlike on-page content, encompasses all activities such as obtaining backlinks (links or connection and promotional articles) from other sites, submitting content to search engines, registering the site with directories, and sharing content on social networks (social bookmarking). Backlinks obtained from external sources should be acquired through keywords designated as target keywords for the site. Furthermore, determining keywords based on their search volume in search engines is also an important aspect.
